We recently had a chance to sit down with Wichman Landscape Construction, LLC owner Jeff Wichman. During our interview, Jeff explained why he’s had to change his marketing tactics, and he told us why he has very high expectations for his employees.
We know, every business owner has good days and bad days. Can you describe your best day as a business owner?
Jeff Wichman: The best days are really those in which we’ve completed the landscaping project and get to see the client’s reaction and satisfaction at the way the project turned out. Although we are able to provide 3-D renders (conceptual renders of the final project), it can still be difficult for the client to visualize their property transformed into their vision. It is always rewarding to see their smiling faces as they walk through their new backyard, climb the entryway stairs or sit and appreciate their new patio.
How do you go about marketing your business?
Jeff Wichman: In the past, word of mouth used to be our biggest source of new leads. We have used Valpack and the Yellow Pages in the past but are finding online marketing to be more effective. Once we began using online marketing (pay per click and search engine optimization) we realized this form of advertising really reached more people, provided better geo-targeting and brought in more leads.
Lastly, do you have any employees? If so, what is your management style?
Jeff Wichman: Yes we have a number of crews (two for hardscape installations and one for site reclamation). Our employees are the lifeblood of our business. My management style is fairly relaxed. I try to find people who are not only talented in their trade but also those who have a true passion for bringing a landscaping project to life.
They’ve got to be enthusiastic about transforming an overgrown backyard into a beautiful winding walkway or turning a dilapidated set of stairs into a regal entryway. Of course they have to be outgoing and friendly as they interface with our clients on a day to day basis.
