A few days ago, we had the chance to interview Paul Brandt, President of Brandt Electrical services, Inc., where we learned a few interesting details about the company that he helped create.
Why did you start your own business, other than to make money?
Paul Brandt: I saw a need in the service industry for quality workmanship at reasonable prices with a focus on providing high quality customer service.
Please describe your services and customers, in other words, the people and businesses that you typically service:
Paul Brandt: We are a full service electrical contractor. We do new construction in commercial and multifamily applications as well as remodels and repairs. We also do service work for residential, commercial and multifamily customers. We can do everything from installing an outlet to rewiring an entire house to the complete wiring of a new apartment property or school.
What is your business plan?
Paul Brandt: My basic business plan was to grow my business slowly, so that the quality of work did not suffer and that I would never lose touch with my customers. So far, that has worked pretty well for us. We found our niche by establishing Brandt as the go-to electrical contractor for quality work at reasonable prices.
Where there times where you wanted to give up? If so, how did you overcome this?
Paul Brandt: There are certainly times that are frustrating and difficult running any business. But I am way too stubborn to give up! When these times arose, I just kept putting one foot in front of the other, continuing to do what I knew was the right thing to do.
How has technology and the internet impacted how you conduct your business?
Paul Brandt: It has definitely impacted how we advertise. Does anyone use a telephone book anymore? That used to be the mainstay of our advertising budget. Now, the internet offers so many opportunities to get in front of customers. The difficulty is choosing which ones to utilize. It has also streamlined our work processes. Less paper and more gadgets to use!
How do you advertise and market your business?
Paul Brandt: Online through Better Business Bureau, as well as other online resources. We also use local newspaper promotions, some telephone book advertising, trade shows, printed material and door hangers. Asking for and getting customer referrals is another way that we market. We need to do more in the social networking area.
